It's Just Too Much...

...the price of milk, that is! I cannot believe how much milk costs! It seems that milk prices are rising faster than the price of gasoline, and that is too much for my liking! Especially with a four-year-old and a 16-month-old in the house, both of whom LOVE some good milk to drink. No kidding, I bet we go through 3-4 gallons a week, and that's a lot of milk! I even checked on WIC, and we barely miss the magic qualifying number. Milk Budget - BUSTED!

So I have been thinking. How much would it cost for us to buy our own milk cow? I mean, we could name her, and keep her in the backyard. Natalie has always said she wanted a pet, so this may be just the thing. Okay, just kidding. I have a feeling that a milk cow in the backyard may just be a little extreme for our family right now. After all, which costs more, milk or hay/cattle feed?

I've never used powdered milk before, but I am starting to wonder about it. Have any of you ever used it before? Come on, I know there must be some funny powdered milk stories out there somewhere!

I was just hoping we could talk Exxon, et. al, to fortify our gasoline with Vitamin D and calcium and turn gasoline into our current health-drink-of choice -- it's WAY cheaper than milk!! This is one of the few times I'm thankful we aren't milk drinkers!

I just got caught up on reading your blog....I enjoy your family even when I don't get to see them at church. And I've been missing them!

Kelsey got on a kick of watching Little House on the Prairie this summer! We didn't have cable/dish network when they were young like yours, either. Not so sure we should have now, but we do. I was glad she was watching that instead of something else. Maybe we should have her and Natalie hang out together! Kelsey didn't ask me those questions, though. Guess I should ask her to see if she knows the answers...

My family drinks a lot of milk, like yours, too. Not as much now that Evan isn't here all year, but we still go through it. I had to break myself of the habit of buying two gallons every time I went to Wal Mart. We thought about buying a cow, too, but I knew I would be the one to milk it so it didn't happen for us, either.

I have heard of mixing 1/2 powdered milk and 1/2 liquid milk. I have never tried it.

I am with you on the price of milk...OUCH! especially when you are on a grocery budget like it appears you are and we are too. We do go through the milk also, close to three gallons a week. I have tried the powder milk b/c once we were out of liquid milk and I had some powder for cooking with. I mixed it up and even add lots of chocolate and my kids were not impressed! I wouldnt recommend it!! Lets just pray the price of a gallon of milk will go down or that our grocery budgets can some how increase to accommodate!

Horrible! I never lliked milk and my parents made me drink about 16oz a day! But, Lord help, when we had to force down that powdered stuff - it was awful!!

That being said - I hear the secret is to mix the two together....
